AVA has finally released some new information about the melamine situation and the word is that the levels of melamine detect are very low and won’t pose any health risk unless you have been consuming it at an insane level your whole lifetime.

To illustrate the point, using US FDA guidelines for melamine intake, AVA gave us the following tables based on the 3 products involved locally:

Another point to note is that US FDA guideline has already incorporated a safety margin of 100-fold. So you will need to consume insanely and over an extended period of time to be at risk.

What Happens To The Melamine In Our Body

Although our melamine is not a food, our body happens to be able to flush it out too. Here’s what a prof at NUH has to say:

The body naturally purges small amounts of melamine, said Professor Yap Hui Kim, senior consultant with the National University Hospital’s University Children’s Medical Institute.

The chemical itself is not poisonous, and causes problems only after accumulating over time. That is when it can form stones and cause kidney failure, she said.
