    Hi James,

I’m new to Singapore and want to buy Sony Vaio CW series with windows 7 in Sitex sale. Is it good to buy there. What will be the difference if I buy it in Sitex sale rather than from sony dealer. Please let me know which is the best place to buy.

    Thanks,
    Sireesha.

    • James says:

      Hi Sireesha,

Booths at SITEX will be offering Sony’s promotion whether they are direct Sony or authorised dealers.

The main difference will be free gifts such as additional memory, bigger harddisk, mouse, notebook bags, etc. This depends on how you bargain.

so feel free to walk and shop around the show, check what is being offered and then decide which offer best suits your needs/wants :)

Most notebook shop around Sim Lim would be closed as they deploy their staffs to SITEX but if you do not like crowds and the promotion from Sony looks attractive enough, I believed that you can visit any of the Sony Showrooms to purchase directly. At most, you forgo some freebies and the SITEX lucky draw opportunity.

      Cheers

  2. Sireesha says:

    Hi James

Thank you so much for the info. I prefer to wait until sale and check what they are offering. If I could not find any interesting sale item then will go for buying in store.

    Thanks,
    Sireesha.

  3. Irene Chew says:

    Hi James,

I like to get a netbook and am considering ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU17, Toshiba NB205-N330BL and Acer AOD250. Do you have any advice on these models or would suggest others instead?

    Thanks, Irene

    • James says:

      Hey Irene,

I need to know what is your main criteria of choosing a netbook …. battery life, portability, type of usage, etc before I can offer any useful suggestion. :)

But in general, almost all netbooks are the same. If you just need to choose one, just check them out at SITEX and get the one with the best value and feels good enough for you.

      Cheers

  4. Felycia says:

    Hi James,

I came accross at this website and read your blogs, it is very interesting and helpful too.

do you know that Mega courts are having a year end sales rite now? I want to buy laptop. Do you think the prices in Court is cheaper compare with SITEX?

Some people said that COURTS prices on laptop are better. Pls help me advice. Thanks! :)

    Felycia.

    • James says:

      Hey Felicia,

Thanks for dropping by, I hope you have found this blog useful :)

If you take into account the freebies you get at IT shows, it usually would give you the best value at that point of time of buying.

For myself, I buy at Courts/Harvey Norman/Best Denki if I need an installment plan or extended warranty. If not, I usually go for IT shows or Sim Lim if it’s urgent. :)

My advice is go shop around, decide on the make and model you want and take note of the price. Wait for SITEX (which is next week only) and scout for the best deal.

      Cheers

  5. Hi James,

do you have any info/ideas on how much would be the price of Nikon D5000 on SITEX 2009 or its freebies perhaps.

    thanks

    • James says:

      Hey Eminus,

Nikon prices at IT Fairs tends to be the same … i.e. not much of any discounts – hence, I predict SGD 1299 to be the price at SITEX 2009.

I am not sure about the freebies yet but I’ll update as soon as I get some info … so stay tune :)

  6. Sireesha says:

    Hi James,

My aunt is visiting Singapore and she wants to buy TV here. Can you please let me know if there will be any offers at SITEX 2009?
If not can you please suggest me any good place to but a plasma or led TV.

    Thanks,
    Sireesha.

    • James says:

      Hey Sireesha,

SITEX 2009 (or any of the other 3 IT shows) are probably the best places to buy a flat screen TV.

Unfortunately they don’t usually hand out price list at the shows (unlike IT products) so it’s tough to consolidate the deals.

So just go down to the show and walk around, I love to check out the Panasonic 42″ Plasmas cos it’s still the best deal in town … usually less than $700 if you deduct all the vouchers they give you at the show. :)

  7. John says:

    Hi James,

I am considering whether to purchase the macbook pro during sitex 2009. I wonder how should I bargain for he free gifts.

    • James says:

      Hey John,

That really depends on your bargaining skill :)

But a trick would be not to commit too early and fast.

There are about 4-5 major Apple resellers there … EpiCentre, NUBOX, Pacific City, Juzz1 and a few others. Visit all of them and compare their offerings.

Take your time to shop and compare. If the offers are similar, ask when you should buy from them or if they could sweeten the deal. They would usually throw in something more or reduce the price slightly.

You can also ask if they would give more discount if you pay cash … probably another 2-3% at best.

Visit on the last day, you might be pleasantly surprise at what you can get. You might want to purchase their display sets, some retailers sell displays sets at good discount.

      So there you go :)

  8. John says:

    Hi James,

Would it be recommended if I go to Multimedia Integrated in Funan and try to bargain with them? For example, I say that maybe I should wait until SITEX 2009 to the staff and try to leave. Would it be better to go to MI or Epicentre or other premium resellers?

Where do you think is possible to get free Magic Mouse and Microsoft Office 2008 when purchasing the Macbook Pro, and how?
    Thanks in advance.

    • James says:

      Hey John,

I think your best chance would still be during the fair.

Apple products are price controlled by Apple so their leeway is quite limited.

You want Free Magic Mouse and MS 2008? It’s possible during the fair. :)

  9. Joycelyn says:

    Hi James,

If I wanted to buy a TV in next week SITEX show, will there be free delivery? And do they provide free installation/setup of the TV?

    • James says:

      Hey Joycelyn,

Free delivery, installation and setup should be the MINIMUM I would expect from the fair … plus vouchers, lucky draws and a little more.

If not, just go next booth :)

  10. John says:

    Hi James,

May I know what is the most effective to bargain for MS 2008 and magic mouse during the fair? Thanks.

  11. Ahmad says:

Hi. I urgently looking for the new Macbook, the Macbook White. Will there be one at the SITEX 2009?

  12. Phil says:

    Hi James,
As today is the last day for me to recontract my boardband subscription with singnet in order to receive a free notebook.
But I am very confused as to choose between Acer Aspire Touch and Rotate Notebook (AS1820PTZ) and Lenovo Ideapad U150 Notebook! Please could you advice which will be a better choice? Or should I wait for the coming Sitex 2009 next weekends (will there be such promotions)?
Hope to hear from you, thanks.

    • James says:

      Hey Phil,

Both are quite equal in specification (give and take a little).

Acer looks more desirable with the cool factor of the touch screen but Lenovo has it’s tradition in making studier notebooks.

So it’s a hard call, it really depends on which you really need.

For myself, I decided to hold off till SITEX 2009 … it’s just 3 days away anyway :)

  13. Phil says:

    Hi James,
    Thanks for your fast response.
So, there will be such promotions for recontract again for the coming Sitex 2009?
Wondering will be the same offers or there are others model up for grab!

    • James says:

      Hey Phil,

      Normally they do have them.

This time round, I do not see Singtel listed as an exhibitor but that does not mean they can’t do a online promotion or one at their Singtel Shop :)

At worst, I’ll wait for the next show … or maybe jump ship to Starhub? :)

  14. JJ says:

    Hi James
Grateful that there is someone like you to advise lost sheep like me in the fast-changing IT world.

My digital photo/video collection is growing too fast so that normal 500GB storage device is no longer sufficient. I am looking for the largest capacity storage device in the market now which :
    1) can allow me to store my huge collection of digital photos/videos, and
    2) which I can simply connect this storage device to the tv (by a cable) to play my photos/videos on the tv conveniently.
Do you know whether there are such storage device around? Appreciate your recommendation if you know of any. Thank you

  15. Di says:

Hi man, any idea on the prices of WD external Hard disks at Sitex. I am looking to get either a 2tb or 2 1 tbs depending on the price.

  16. Edo says:

Hie James, do u noe how much is the nikon d90? what freebies i can get?

    Thanks.

  17. Prashant says:

    Hi James,
Thanks for the valuable information on SITEX. I need to buy 2 things for my folks in india.
    1) Sony Handycam DCR SR 67e- Guess on ur link its not available.. are they selling it at SITEX? They are selling at amazon at approx 450-470USD which is around 630-650 SGD incl shipping cost..
    2) Any netbook for home just for internet usage.. Any cheap and good netbook u recommend?
Would be going to SITEX tom or day after.. Would be good to know ur choice before..
    Thanks

    • James says:

      Hey Prashant,

      You are welcome :)

      1) If it isn’t on the brochure, it’s probably not on promotion at SITEX 2009. But you can still check with the sale staffs, who knows, they might be able to make a special arrangement :)
      2) Seriously, any netbook will do. For really cheap, Axioo is not bad. For reliability, I go with Asus or MSI. But that’s personal preference.

      Cheers

  18. Prashant says:

Thank you James.. i just wondered whether Sony model is available there… Axioo or Asus.. not sure whether they do have services in india.. last time i bought lenovo as it has lot of services available in my home city.. Thanks again!!

  19. Prashant says:

Thanks again James!! Will go tom!!

  20. Phil says:

    Hi James,
This is Phil here again. So the Sitex 2009 has exactly the same promotions as Singtel Pre-Christmas promotions.
    What should I choose now?

    Thanks & best regards.

  21. Catherine says:

    Hi James

came across this website by chance and I think you’ve uploaded lots of useful info!

I wanted to trade in my laptop for macbook. Do you have any idea if the trade-in price at the fair is better? Any booth that I can go to?

    Thanks!

    regards
    Catherine

    • James says:

      Hey Catherine,

      Thank You! :)

I think cash converter is there to take in 2nd hand laptops. Some booths may also take trade-in’s but I’m not sure which and what price they are willing to pay.

Cash Converter is located in Hall 5 Booth 5A00, left front corner when you enter Hall 5.

      Cheers

  22. Prashant says:

    Hey James,
    Thanks for the suggestion.
I got my lenovo S10-2 at a very affordable price.
    Its sleek and pretty attractive..
    Thanks

    Prashant

  23. Phil says:

    Yeah James,
I also decided to recontract and get the Acer Touch & Rotate.
Thanks for all your advises & infomations.
    Have a wonderful Sunday.. :)

    • James says:

      Hey Phil,

      Great choice.

I still have trouble recontracting it online so I’ll be going down to a Singtel shop to recontract for the Acer. :)

Update: Done recontracting for the Acer … activation on 4 Dec … can’t wait to collect the Notebook and do a review on it :D

  24. Phil says:

    Hi James,

Still remember that time we were saying about recontract and getting the Acer touch n rotate laptop?
Fyi, yesterday I went to claim the laptop and was told that there isn’t any stock! So, in returned they offered me with Acer Aspire 4736G laptop. Or I’ll have to wait till end December then when the stock is here, they will conteact me and send it to me, on top of that they are giving a wavial for 1mth boardband subscription.
But in the end, I opted for the upgmrade to Acer Aspire 4736G model. Cos, it has built-in webcam, ac-drive & so called graphic card.
So, did I made a right choice?
Another question: Windows 7 only provides microsoft office softwares for a trail run of 60days only, not permanent is it?
Hope to hear from u again.
    Thanks & have a great weekend. :)

    Best Regards,
    Phil

    • James says:

      Hi Phil,

I’m collecting mine next Tuesday … but I didn’t know that they still have no stock for the touch & rotate.

What is the exact spec of the Acer notebook you got from Singtel and how much did you have to fork out to “Upgrade”?

I found some info of the Acer Aspire 4736G laptop online, which states that it has a Core 2 Duo P8700 Processor and an Nvidia G105 graphics with 512MB of dedicated VRAM.

It’s definitely no slouch and beats the hell out of the touch & rotate in terms of performance but it’s heavier at 2.3Kg and battery life would be a concern.

So whether you have made a right choice depends on whether do you need portability/battery life or computational/graphics performance.

And yes, normally the MS Office is only for 60days. After the 60days, it would ask you for a key to activate it or it would not work.

      Cheers :)

  25. Phil says:

    Halo James,

    Thanks for your prompt reply.
These are the specifications stated on the notebook:
    * Intel Core Duo processor T6600 (2.2GHz 800MHz FSB)
    * NVIDIA GeForce G105M, Up to 1279MB TurboCache
    * 14.0″ HD LED LCD
    * 2GB Memory
    * 320GB HDD
    * DVD Super Multi DL drive
    * 802.11b/g/n
    * 6-cell Li-ion battery
    * 16:9 HD LED (True Cinematic View) HDMI

I did not pay any extra cost at all.
What you meant by battery life is a concern?
To be frank, I also don’t know whether have I made a correct choice (cos I have to make instant decision as there are other customers in the queue behind)! But are they of the same value as in retail price?
This set is definitely heavier than the touch n rotate, because it has the dvd drive + built-in webcam. And it wasn’t the slim type as the touch n rotate.

Hope to hear from you again soon. Have a beautiful Sunday.

    Warmest Regards,
    Phil

    • James says:

      Hey Phil,

I happened to walk by a Newstead outlet at 313@Somerset today and saw the Acer Aspire 4736G laptop that you mentioned.

The specs matches what you just mentioned (lower spec’ed then the one I found online) and it retails at $1099 <- actually it's of lower retail value than the touch and rotate which might explain the 1 month waiver you were given (it's to cover the shortfall in retail value).

Erm … the touch and rotate uses ultra low voltage cpu which gives longer battery life to a notebook while the T6600 are more powerful but consumes cuts your battery life significantly. So it depends on whether you want a notebook that last longer on a single charge or a more powerful notebook. :)

There's no right or wrong decision, it really depends on your needs … it's a hard call for me too but I think I may still take the touch and rotate.

Have a nice weekend too :)

      Cheers

  26. Phil says:

    Hey James,

Perhaps you have misunderstood my message. The free one month wavial is only applicable if I choose to opt for the touch n rotate and needs to wait for the stock to arrive at end of the month.

Well, anyway I have already selected the 4736G model. There is no way I can request for an exchange! hehe…
Since you rather wait for touch n rotate, perhaps I have already made a wrong decision! Haiz… :(

Thanks for all your replied & advises. Good day.. ;)

    Warmest Regards,
    Phil

    • James says:

      Hey Phil,

Hmmm … that does not make sense to me … cheaper notebook (based on the prices I saw) to replace something that cost more and no freebies to compensate?

I think you should make some noise … I know I would :)

Like I say, there is no wrong or right decision, depends on what you need it for … if I need a notebook to sit on my desk most of the time for work purpose … the Acer 4736G would be a better choice given that it has a bigger screen, more powerful processor and optical drive. Touch screen would have less tangible benefits and battery life is not an issue since I would be permanently plug into the wall socket for power.

So don’t kick yourself for it … anyway, you have it now … ENJOY IT :)

  27. chelvi says:

    Hi James,
Juz came across yr site tday. Its a very useful site. I m intending to to get a new PC but I’m not very sure of wheather to get a laptop or stick to a desktop as per now.
Pls advice me on the pro and cons of a laptop or desktop. Thank You n awaiting yr reply!

    Warmest Regards,
    Chelvi

    • James says:

      Hey Chelvi,

Sorry for such a late reply … I was out of town for a week :)

Hmm … Actually, your question is very general and you did not state what you need the computer for so I’ll just give you the general recommendation:

      Desktop Pros:
      1) Generally computing power per dollar. i.e. You usually get a more powerful computer for the same price vs a notebook.
      2) Larger screen in excess of 20″.
      3) More customization options.

      Desktop Cons:
      1) Immobile
      2) Larger desk footprint

Notebook pros & cons are very much the opposite of what I state for the Desktop.

If your need is for gaming, graphic or computing intensive stuffs or even watching movies or you are on a tight budget … it’s usually better to go for a Desktop.

If your need is portability, simple email surfing, word processing or you have a healthier budget (not always true as netbooks have bridge this gap) … a notebook might be better.

      Cheers :)
