Hi Folks,
The Lenovo S10 has finally landed …. well a couple of days ago. But I just saw it with my own eyes today.

Unclear Points
There are some descripencies or unclear points between the official brochures and the specs that appear on local sales pamplets.
Firstly, the weight of the S10 is officially at 1.25kg with 3-cell battery but local shops are advertising it as “Only 1.1kg with 3-cell battery”.
Secondly, it is still unclear what is the max ram of the S10. One shop told me that it has only 1 ram slot and the S10 contains a 1Gb Ram which can be upgraded to a 2 Gb stick.
While another shop advertise the 1Gb ram as (2x512MB). So which is which? I am not sure but if you intent to get it, you better ask first.
Heat Issue
It was said that “Lenovo engineered the netbooks to reduce the heat emitted on key contact areas such as the bottom of the PC, the palm rest and the keyboard.”
When I tested it out with my bare hands, the display set was uncomfortably warm (no, it won’t cook an egg as some websites has suggested but uncomfortable, yes).
Granted, the set was running a movie looping since they started business in the morning so it might be a little hot. So I went to check out another set on standby and I find that it is just slightly warmer then my MSI Wind.
Battery Life
Battery life is max 3 hours. Typical would be closer to 2 hours with wifi on. Currently only 3-cell battery is available but the sale people indicated that a larger capacity battery will be coming in soon.
Availability And Pricing
The Lenovo S10 is currently selling at SGD 799 with 1Gb ram.
Currently, only the white color set is available. More colors are said to be coming in sometime in October.
I spotted them in Funan The IT Mall at the level 1 atrium (Lenovo Road show), at various level 3 and level 4 shops. Some shops offer additional freebies such as netbook sleeves and additional warranty.
I’m not sure if stocks are in Sim Lim Square yet as I could not find a parking lot. So you will have to find it out yourself.
Cheers,
James
UPDATE: A few shops at Sim Lim Square are also selling the Lenovo S10 @ SGD 799. No other color other then white has been spotted. (21st Sept 08)
UPDATE 2: The Black Version has arrived here.

I just bought a Lenovo S10 in Singapore too and I keep hearing a very high pitch whine. I think its happening when the computer is under load. Is it normal, do you hear it on yours too?
Hey Ken,
If what you hear is a fan blowing type of whine. It’s normal. Other then that it’s not normal. If possible, sent it in for Lenovo support to take a look.
Cheers
I might contact Lenovo to have a look. I think it comes on when the fan spins up. Its a very high pitched sound that my Mom can’t hear but its very annoying for me.
The funny thing is at maximum load and the fan is spinning the most, the sound goes away. I read on the internet that it might also be an electronic sound from CPU throttling called piezoelectric effect.
Hey Ken,
It might very well be (I have an old scanner that whines every time it starts although there are no fans in it – some electronic component must be whining). If it irritates you, get it changed (if your set is still new and you are in country).
Cheers
I thk HP2133 still the best…. true metal casing… lenovo S10,acer aspire one and dell mini9 look too plastic…
Hey wp khoo,
Too bad HP2133 has a underpowered processor with an overbloated OS. Look wise, I agreed it’s pretty sexy
hey buddies
i am planning to buy a small laptop for my office work, which i do more in word and excel. my budget is around 750-800 singapore dollers. can you suggest any other model.
Hey rahul,
For your budget, the Lenovo S10 fits nicely. But if you need another choice below SGD 800 then maybe the Axioo Pico (which is a MSI Wind OEM).
It should be selling around SGD 748 and comes with a 10″ LCD which might be a better choice for Excel.
Cheers
Just bout an S10 on 22 Nov and went back to exchange on 23 Nov.
If i am not wrong the recent batch got software issue can’t update windows and keep poping up error message. Sad that such a thing could happen. Just sent it to service center today hope thaey can do something to the software
Hey Gilbert,
Sorry to hear about your problems with the S10. Stuffs can happen but most important thing is that aftersales support must be there to resolve it efficiently … please update us on your experience with Lenovo aftersales services.
Ken, James, has the high-pitched sound disappeared by now? My new lenovo s10 came in the mail today and I hear the same high-frequency noise when the fan starts to run. Likewise, it disappears when the fan is running at full blast, but still, during simple tasks, the noise is extremely annoying. I’ve called tech support about it, and they couldn’t offer an explanation. I think I’m sending mine in for a new one, but I hope the problem doesn’t replicate in the new laptop.
Please email me if you have any updates regarding this issue, since I can’t seem to find any others with the same problem, online.
Hi Mina,
Sorry to hear that you have the same problem as Ken. Send it back for a new one if you deem the product as unacceptable.
Btw, does the whine comes back in mid usage or only at the beginning?
Hi James,
Haha, I went through customer service for what seemed like an eternity before I got an answer. They advised me to return it for a new one.
But yes, the irritating noise comes on during mid-usage. I have very good hearing so I can’t deal with the noise. It’s more of a super high-pitched screeching sound.
Hey Mina,
Thanks for the update and that’s good news indeed. Lenovo CS is not as bad as reported.
The only thing left now is to get a new set and enjoy it
I just got the S10 in 160GB and 1GB RAM in black and love it other than the high-pitched noise someone else reported. I’m curious as to whether there are units out there without that high-pitch noise or maybe not everyone is bothered by it -> low number of reports of the high-pitched noise.
Let me know if your new replacement model makes that annoying sound still.
Can u tell me if IMM sell it? Can u play Left 4 Dead FULL GRAPHICS on this laptop? i hope u will give me a reply as soon as possible….
Hey Unknown,
Does IMM sell the S10? Most probably … check out Best Denki, NEWSTEAD or Challenger.
Does it play Left 4 Dead (FULL GRAPHICS) … NO WAY!!
At this moment … none of the commercially available netbook (that I know of) have a graphic subsystem on par with NVIDIA 7600 (based on the games recommended spec).
You might be better off looking for a gaming notebook.
Cheers
Then, what do u think of Asus X61GX , can it play left 4 dead, at least medium graphics? here is the link to the specs of it http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/notebooks/0,39050488,44607824p,00.htm
, i hope you will give me a reply as soon as possible…………
If yes, can you use Asus X61GX to play left 4 dead ( FULL GRAPHICS)please give me a reply as soon as possible………
And James, can you check for me whether Asus X61GX already come out in Sim Lim Square as i am in a trip in other country……….. If you willing to , please tell me the price, i wonder if it is S$1398 or not(as said in asia.cnet.com)
I also hope u can help me to check out the NEC Versa E6S10 in Sim Lim Square, and if you willing to , or you happen to go to Sim Lim Square, help me to check out the price and can it play left 4 dead(FULL GRAPHICS)? Here is the link to the specification http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/notebooks/0,39050488,43837052p,00.htm
I also have a Lenovo S10 since Dec 08. I was using it without any problem so far until this week when it suddenly does not switch on anymore. When pressing power on, nothing happens. The first light does not light on. Only the last 2 (showing that battery is on and bluetooth is on) light on.
I’ve tried to disconnect power cord, remove battery, press power from 5-45 secs, reconnect battery, reconnect power cable and turn on and still nothing.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks
Sylvie
Hey Sylvie,
Sorry to hear about that.
Sounds like something is not working properly within the unit (or it could be the power adapter).
Since you do not have the necessary spare parts to test it out, I would think it’s best to send your unit back to Lenovo for a check.
Cheers
how long does the battery of a lenovo s10 last?
Hey Teresa,
With the original 3-cell battery – around 3 hours max on Win XP.
I just bought the ideapad s10-2. Tried to use the sim card reader for my mobile broadband. I cannot insert the card into the slot at all. Is the sim card reader a dummy slot?
Thanks
Hey Vincent,
I don’t recall the Ideapad S10-2 available in SG being 3G equipped.
There might be a slot there but you need the 3G Modem to be built-in for it to work.
Check your spec or call your retailer who sold you the netbook to verify if 3G was included
