Marina Bay Sands Wants You But Do You Want The Job

Hi Folks,

Straits Times did a front page highlighting Marina Bay Sands recruitment drive, which is a good news for Singaporeans who are looking for a job. They don’t need you to have experience because they will train you.

To prepare them for jobs in the field, Marina Bay Sands is partnering the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and the National Trades Union Congress’ (NTUC) Employment and Employability Institute (e2i).

But what jobs are there available and do you want it? That’s the important question, isn’t it?

A check with Marina Bay Sands website reveals that they have 40 positions opened but which are the ones that doesn’t require any experience or certification? Let’s take a look.

  1. BELLMANAssist guests with their luggage and belongings.
    • Requires Secondary school education or equivalent
  2. DOORMAN - Extend a warm welcome to our guests at the Hotel driveway by opening car doors and assisting with guest arrivals and departures.
    • Requires Secondary school education or equivalent
  3. PUBLIC AREA ATTENDANTEnsure the cleanliness of our Hotel public areas (Nice name for cleaner)
    • Requires Primary School education.
  4. ROOM ATTENDANTPrepare Hotel guest rooms and suites.
    • Requires Primary School education.
  5. STEWARD ATTENDANTEnsure the cleanliness of kitchenware, kitchen equipment and all restaurant tableware.
    • Requires Primary School education.
  6. WAITER / WAITRESSServe food & beverages and create memorable dining experiences for our guests.
    • Requires Secondary school education or equivalent

That’s it. 6 out of 40 that doesn’t need any experience or certification in any particular fields.

So is that good or bad?

I would think the fact that a company is willing to do massive recruitment when the Singapore economy has just entered recession is massive good news. The better news would be that they probably need a lot of people to fill these position.

It did not say how many people it would recruit this time, but the resort’s general manager George Tanasijevich said ‘as many as possible’ would be hired.

So there you have it. I just save you some time if you are wondering what jobs could you do without massive retraining and re-certification out of your own pocket. I guess the rest is up to you. :)

Update: 3,500 vying for positions

Cheers,
James

hmm….i think these 6 jobs are for the much older folks but then ain’t it a physically demanding job? I guess then it will be non signaporeans who will be taking up these low end jobs.

I agree with it too… Btw, do you think it is too early for recruiting staffs now? Retrenchment has just started. Many people are seeking for jobs now, can’t wait till end of next year for Marina Bay Sands to open!

  3. James says:

    Hi Wenhan,

I doubt that Sands will or can get foreigners for those jobs. One of the key reasons they landed the IR deal, other than nice designs and concepts, was the promise to hire locals. :)

  4. James says:

    Hey Angeline,

I think the timing is just right. They need to fill about 10,000 jobs and will probably be doing in different phases.

So they will probably need at least 1 month each phase for advertising and recruiting, follow by interviews and selections. Then the training will begin after that, maybe for 1-3 months.

Sands was supposed to be ready in 2009 which is just 2.5 months off the calender, so not much time actually. But judging from the ongoing construction I saw over the weekend. I would say 3rd or 4th quarter opening is more likely.

Meanwhile, maybe the folks will get on the job trainings attached elsewhere? :)

Hie James, since Ure working with MBS can I ask you a few question? I was selected after e interview n was told to wait for 2 weeks for them to do a background check but yet to received anything from them after 2 weeks plus. Is there anywhere I could chck with them. Hw you can advice. Many thanks!

    • James says:

      Hey Sue,

Actually I don’t work for MBS and I cannot advice on their procedures … but in Singapore, it’s normal that only successful applicants get notified of their employment (at least that’s the norm that I know of).

  12. princess says:

hi! after my interview on MBS, i havent receive mail from MBS…. it’s been 4weeks…and im started to worried about it…is it possible to call to their recruitment center? or ill just wait for their call? thanks!

    • James says:

      Hey Princess,

Local practice seems to be “Only Successful Applicants Will Receive Mail” … so if you do not get any, most likely it means … unsuccessful.

But I feel there is no harm to all and check … meanwhile, you might also want to apply for other available vacancies where available :)

    • Sean says:
